[Gastroenterology] The small intestine

Organ system: The digestive system


The small intestine is a very long tract which is folded into the abdominal cavity. Its primary role is digestion and it has a massive surface area to achieve this efficiently. Food enters from the stomach, passes through the small intestine and passes into the cecum of the large intestine.

  • Jejunum
  • Ileum
