The respiratory tract

The lungs are organs specialised in safe gas exchange between venous blood and the atmosphere.

The lungs and the pulmonary circulation are responsible for exposing deoxygenated blood to the atmosphere to facilitate oxygenation. The lung have developed to do this in a safe way which minimises the risk of infections or contamination.
