Emergency situation
- A patient needs airway protection, but intratracheal intubation fails
- The next option is to insert a supraglottic airway device and attempt ventilation. If SAD ventilation fails, declare failed SAD ventilation.
- Face mask ventilation should be attempted. If face mask ventilation fails, declare CICO (can't intubate, can't oxygenate).
- The last resort is a cricothyrotomy. Emergency access to the front of the neck must be obtained and cricothyrotomy should be attempted.
