Physiology
- Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands.
Pathophysiology
- Hypoparathyroidism is a pathological state caused by blood PTH levels lower than the reference range.
This leads to insufficient osteoclast inactivity.
There is insufficient bone resorption. There may be hypocalcaemia.
Causes
- Damage to the parathyroid glands during surgery.
- Parathyroidectomy
