[Oncology] Adverse effects of treatment

Direct cytotoxic effects

This can cause:
  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Chemotherapy-induced nail changes
  • Bone marrow suppression 
    • Immunosuppression
      • Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia
  •  Organ damage or fibrosis
    • Chemotherapy-induced intestinal injury
    • Chemotherapy-induced heart block
    • Chemotherapy-induced lung fibrosis
    • Chemotherapy-induced hepatotoxicity
    • Chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity

Post-chemotherapy cognitive impairment (chemo brain)

This is a poorly understood syndrome but it is commonly experienced by patients after chemotherapy.
Symptoms include impairment of visual and semantic memory, attention and motor coordination.
It usually resolves within 4 years after chemotherapy.
