Bronchiectasis

Disease class: Bronchial diseases

Bronchiectasis is a permanent dilation of the airways.

 

Pathophysiology

  • The mucociliary elevator is unable to function in these widened passages and pathogenic bacteria are not effectively cleared.
  • The respiratory tract is prone to infections, which can cause further scarring and progression of the disease.
