Starvation

Disease class: Malnutrition

Definition

A condition that results from a prolonged lack of food. The person suffers weight loss and changes in the body’s metabolism, with production of potentially harmful chemicals called ketones and acetone. In cases of slow starvation, the vitality of the tissues is reduced and they become more liable to diseases.
