Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt

Also known as TIPSS

This helps to reduce portal hypertension and therefore variceal bleeding. 

TIPSS may worsen hepatic encephalopathy as it allows blood containing nitrogenous waste to bypass the liver entirely and return to the brain.
