When AKS occurs with Wernicke encephalopathy, the diagnosis is Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
Pathophysiology
It is caused by vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency.There is neuronal loss in the medial thalamus and mammillary bodies of the posterior hypothalamus. There is generalised cerebral atrophy.
