Developmental assessment

This refers to the assessment of the development of children.

 

The key questions to answer

Gross motor skills

  • Can they sit? 
  • Can they walk? 
  • Can they run?
  • Can they balance?
  • Can they hop?
  • Can they use stairs?

Fine motor skills

  • Can they build structures with bricks?
  • Can they draw? 
  • Can they turn pages in a book?

Speech / language skills

  • How many words can they string together?
  • Can they follow instructions?

Social skills

  • Can they recognise social cues?
  • Can they play imaginative games?

 

Developmental age: 6 months 

Gross motor skills

  • Can sit without support. Rounded back.
  • Can roll from tummy (prone) to back (supine).

Fine motor skills

  • Can transfer objects from hand to hand.

Speech / language skills

  • Can babble.

 

Developmental age: 12 months 

Gross motor skills

  • Can walk alone.

Fine motor skills

  • Can stack 2 blocks.

Speech / language skills

  • 3 words.

 

Developmental age: 18 months 

Gross motor skills

  • Can run.
  • Can jump.

Fine motor skills

  • Can stack 4 blocks.

Speech / language skills

  • 1-6 words.
  • Can understand nouns.

 

Developmental age: 2 Years 

Gross motor skills

  • Can run tiptoe.

Fine motor skills

  • Can stack 8 blocks.
  • Can draw a verticle line.

Speech / language skills

  • 50+ words
  • Can string 2 words together. 
  • Can understand verbs.

Social skills

  • Should be beyond stranger fear.

 

Developmental age: 3 Years 

Gross motor skills

  • Can kick a ball.
  • Can hop on one foot for 3 steps. Capable with each foot. 
  • Can walk upstairs, one foot per step. Can walk downstairs, two feet per step.

Fine motor skills

  • Can stack 8 blocks.
  • Can draw a verticle line, horizontal line, a circle.

Speech / language skills

  • Can string 3-4 words together.
  • Can understand prepositions.
  • Can understand negatives.
  • Can understand adjectives.

Social skills

  • May share with friends.

 

Developmental age: 4 Years

Gross motor skills

  • Can kick a ball. 
  • Can hop on one foot for 3 steps. Capable with each foot.
  • Can walk upstairs / downstairs like an adult.

Fine motor skills

  • Can stack 12 blocks.
  • Can draw a circle, a cross.

Speech / language skills

  • Can understand comparatives.
  • Can understand complex instructions.
  • Can describe complex narratives or sequences.

Social skills

  • Can play imaginative games and follow rules.
  • Can show concern and sympathy.
