Organophosphate poisoning

Organophosphates are a class of chemical compounds. They are used as pesticides. They have a pharmacological effect of irreversible acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

 

Examples

  • Echothiophate (eye drops) : glaucoma treatment
  • Sarin (chemical weapon, 'nerve agent')
  • Novichok agents (chemical weapon, 'nerve agent')

 

Symptoms 

  • Convulsive spasms 
  • Spastic paralysis
  • Bronchorrhea (excessive bronchial secretions)
  • Bronchospasm (bronchial constriction)
  • SLUDGE
    • Salivation (hypersalivation)
    • Lacrimation (involuntary)
    • Urination (involuntary)
    • Defecation (involuntary)
    • Gastrointestinal distress (abdominal pain)
    • Emesis (vomiting)
  • Miosis (pupil constriction)

Complications

  • Hypoxia
    • Brain damage
    • Death 1-10 minutes after exposure
