History of medicine: 21st century
2000s decade
- February 2004 : First licensing of an angiogenesis inhibitor therapy for cancer: bevacizumab.
- November 2008 : First live birth resulting from whole ovarian transplantation.
2010s decade
- March 2010: First full-face transplantation.
- January 2011 : Case report of successful skin regeneration after using a 'skin gun' spray cells onto deep dermal burns.
- March 2011 : First clinical trial (Phase 1) of human genetic engineering: blood was extracted from the patients, the T-cells were altered (by zinc-finger nucleases) and then transfused back into the body.
- July 2013 : Vascularized and functional human liver tissue was generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells by transplantation of liver buds created in vitro.
- October 2014 : First uterine transplantation to result in a live birth.
- December 2014 : First successful transplantation of neonatal organs.
- November 2017 : First publication of a regeneration of the entire human epidermis using transgenic stem cells.
- 2018 : Patients regained voluntary control of paralysed muscles after a course of temporospatially selective spinal cord stimulation and physical therapy.
- September 2018 : First report of in-body human genetic engineering (zinc-finger nucleases).
- October 2018 : Researchers teach a deep convolutional neural network to distinguish
between two types of lung cancer and normal lung tissue from
histopathology slides.
- November 2018 : First report of gene edited embryos implanted inside a pregnant woman.
- July 2019 : Publication of a prospective case series of nerve transfer surgery. It reported successful grafting of nerves to correct upper limb function in tetraplegic patients.
- 24-27 December 2019: First identification of SARS-CoV2, the causative organism in the COVID19 pandemic.
