This is a consequence of severe liver disease.
These patients can benefit from dialysis in the short-term, but without imminent liver transplantation, this is futile.

Signs and biochemical abnormalities

• Abnormalities in urea and electrolytes (U&Es) indicative of renal failure
• Oliguria 
• Low sodium in the urine
• Urine osmolality higher than the blood
• Serum sodium lower than 130 mmol/L
