Bacilli

Bacilli is a class of bacteria. All species in this class are Gram-positive.

  • Enterococcus species : UTIs,

Streptococcus: Group A vs Group B 

Group A Streptococcus species

  • Streptococcus anginosus
  • Streptococcus dysgalactiae  
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
GAS can cause:
  • Bacteraemia
  • Erysipelas
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Scarlet fever
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis 
  • Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome
  • Necrotising fasciitis
  • Pneumonia 

 

Group B Streptococcus species

  • Streptococcus agalactiae
GBS can cause:
  • Chorioamnionitis
  • Postpartum infections
  • GBS urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs may induce labour and cause premature delivery and miscarriage.
  • Neonatal septicemia
  • Neonatal pneumonia
  • Neonatal meningitis
