Also known as chickenpox.
Pathophysiology
This disease is caused by human alphaherpesvirus 3 (HHV-3) also known as varicella zoster virus (VZV).
HHV-3 can survive for decades in a latent state inside spinal nerves. During periods of immunosuppression, the virus can reactivate and infect the nerve. This causes a disease called herpes zoster (also known as shingles).
