Human papillomavirus

HPV is a double-stranded DNA virus which causes warts.

HPV infection is associated with:
  • Cervical cancer 
  • Cancers of the vagina, vulva, penis, and anus 
  • Cancer of the anus
  • Cancer of the mouth and throat 

 

Prevention

  • The HPV vaccine is offered to girls aged 11-13 in the UK. 
  • The Government has announced it will be introducing vaccination for boys of the same age. 
  • Men who have sex with men can request the vaccine through sexual health clinics.
