  • 1628: William Harvey published the first description of the double circulatory system in detail.
  • 1644: First use of a microscope to observe microscopic organic tissue.
  • 1645-1646: Descartes proposed a physical structure in the brain could link the mind and body.
  • 1661: First microscopic identification of the pulmonary capillary network.
  • 1665: First recognition of the subunit of living tissue: the cell.
  • 1676: First visible observation of microscopic single-celled organisms reported.
