• 1934: Born in Siberia, Russia.
• 1960: Joined the sixth Soviet Antarctic Expedition as a doctor.
• 1961: Developed appendicitis. Performed self-surgery.
• 1962: Returned to Leningrad.
• 1966: Published an MD thesis.
• 1986: Became head of surgery at the Saint Petersburg Research Institute for Tubercular Pulmonology.
• 2000: Died in Saint Petersburg, Russia (aged 66).

Great feats

• Performed an appendectomy on himself while isolated in the antarctic with severe appendicitis.
