Multiple Myeloma

Disease class: Haemostatic disorders
Disease class: Paraproteinaemias

Multiple Myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells.

Epidemiology

  • This is the 19th most common cancer in the UK.

Investigations

  • X-ray imaging of the skull: "Raindrop skull" appearance, due to lytic bone lesions.
  • Urine electrophoresis: positive for Bence Jones protein. This was originally done by heating a urine specimen to cause protein precipitation. More recently, they are detected by electrophoresis of concentrated urine or serum free light chain assays.
