Lymphoma

Disease class: Distinct histological types of neoplasm
Disease class: Lymphoproliferative disorders

Types

This refers to a malignant neoplasm of the lymphatic system.

Lymphoma starts from precursors to lymphocytes. It usually occupies the lymphatic system.
Lymphoblastic leukaemias also start in these cells, but leukaemia cells usually occupy the blood, rather than the lymph nodes.
Lymphoma is first divided histologically and clinically into two types:

Hodgkin lymphoma (20% of lymphomas)

Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for less than 1% of new cancer cases in the UK each year.
In males in the UK, it is the 19th most common cancer.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (80% of lymphomas)

B-cell lymphoma (~88% of NHLs)

T-cell lymphoma (~12% of NHLs)

  • Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL)
    • Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma
    • PTCL not-otherwise-specified
  • Cutaneous (skin) lymphomas
    • Mycosis fungoides

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for 4% of new cancer cases in the UK each year.
It is the 6th most common cancer in the UK.
